A Card Can Be Handed Off — A Face Can't
Give a student a card or badge and sooner or later, one of them ends up in someone else's pocket for the morning. A friend taps in for a classmate running late, or worse, skipping entirely, and there's no way for a magnetic strip to know the difference. A face has to actually be there. That single shift from checking a credential to checking a person is what makes buddy check-in far harder to pull off, not just a workaround problem with an easy fix.
One Campus, a Dozen Different Access Rules
A university isn't one building with one rule. Dorms are for residents only. Classrooms mix students and faculty. Libraries let in more people than the dining hall does. Labs are locked down by department.
